Logistical Support for Writers
One of the largest challenges for a writer is the constant cycle of submissions and rejections, of babysitting a process so far removed from the actual writing that they love. The Hundred and Four has a kind of solution for that -- strength in numbers.
In each group of apprentices, during the last quarter of their term, will both work as instructors to apprentices of their own and begin researching and submitting their work and the work of their peers to publications, agents and potential employers. They will be able to show samples from their course work at The Hundred and Four as well as provide recommendations from established writers who will serve as "master instructors."
The period of submissions will last for one month and rotate between apprentices. The apprentices will also serve to manage submissions for their instructor, so they'll get a better experience for what it should be like once they have their own body of work. Likewise, this will provide valuable experience in both working as an agent (which is another available career path) and in understanding the realities of a professional writing life while not making it an everyday struggle.
It is the hope that each "class" will continue to support each other in their professional endeavors, or at least have gotten enough of an understanding of the business to not be discouraged by the process.
