The Mission

The Hundred and Four exists, simply, to make better writers, one line at a time.

Two quotes from San Francisco Chronicle columnist and Rolling Stone veteran Jon Carroll* are apropos ...

"If you tell the truth, you are often selling out the people who are near to you, who have agreed to talk to you, who have told you their stories, who have gone on travels with you. Writers are not nice people, although they may be charming enough."

"A writer is a kind of holy sociopath. A writer -- a good one, anyway -- is always in danger of getting run out of town or denounced from the pulpit or charged with self-indulgence or willful obscurantism or just plain rudeness."

The belief of The Hundred and Four is that writers are practitioners of an elegant discipline, and that writing is, in many ways, a self-directed journey without end. Through our innovative instructional methods and using the philosophy of the organization, The Hundred and Four offers both valuable lessons and logistical support for aspiring writers who have shown a level of natural skill and determination.

We also believe that, as evidenced by the quotes above, writing can be an ... exciting path that can sometimes have challenges that can confront the less experienced, and as many of the bumps on the road that remove from their path, the better.

What's New in the Current Issue?

* = Jon Carroll is not involved with and does not endorse the Hundred and Four. They're just useful quotes.
